How do I get to Queenstown?

There are direct flights to Queenstown from Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, or you can connect through the New Zealand domestic ports of Auckland and Christchurch with Air New Zealand.

Will I need a car once I arrive in Queenstown?

Queenstown is a very walkable township. All of the Gay Ski Week QT events are walking distance from the town centre, but if you’re a little footsore from dancing all night and skiing all day then there are plenty of taxis available to get you home at the end of the night.

If you wish to drive a car be aware that you will be driving in winter conditions. While there will be no snow at ground level, you may need to use chains on the roads up to the ski fields. Gay Ski Week Packages will organise this with your rental car company and they will provide you with details to fit them before you leave the depot.

What should I pack?

Gay Ski Week QT falls at the end of winter so while there is snow on the mountains it is very rare for there to be snow on the ground.

Temperatures in Queenstown average around 0°C - 10°C and while it’s a perfect opportunity to wear that fabulous winter coat, scarf or gloves you haven’t made use of in the warm Australian winter, we suggest you dress like an onion (in layers) because once you hit the dance floor at Gay Ski Week QT events you’ll warm up in no time and be peeling everything off.

Queenstown itself is generally a causal town. Jeans are acceptable in most places unless you wish to dine at some of the high end luxury lodges or golf courses. And don’t forget to bring a swimsuit for soaking in those alpine hot pools apres ski!

How close are the ski fields to Queenstown?

Coronet Peak is a 25 minute drive from the township and The Remarkables is a 40 minute drive. Over the Crown Range at Lake Wanaka are the fields of Cardrona and Treble Cone, they are 1 hour and 1.5 hour drive from Queenstown respectively. There are daily bookable Ski Bus transfers to Coronet Peak, The Remarkables, Cardrona and Treble Cone from Queenstown. Ask Gay Ski Week Packages to book these for you.

What is skiing in New Zealand like?

All of New Zealand’s ski fields are on mountain ranges above the tree line and offer blue skies, white slopes and spectacular views. Late winter/early spring skiing is known for its settled weather and thick base conditions. The runs are well groomed and wide and suit all skill levels from beginner to advanced. For the more adventurous skiers and snowboarders there is access to extreme off-piste terrain and even heli-skiing – where you can take off for the day with a guide and a helicopter to find the untouched powder runs on the Southern Alps.

Do I have to be an expert skier or boarder?

Definitely not. Gay Ski Week Packages have loads of beginner ski and snow board packages available at a range of prices per day and each field in the region caters for a range of skill levels – from beginner to advanced. Queenstown has a huge range of awesome activities for any type of traveller.

From jet boating, bungy jumping and whitewater rafting, to wine tasting, lake cruises, cycling trails and golf – there’s something for everyone in Queenstown and Gay Ski Week Packages can arrange sightseeing and activity packages just for you.
